10 Songs to Listen to When You’re Going through Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy and financial struggle can be frustrating, but it can also provide a much needed opportunity to start fresh. Use this opportunity to reflect on personal finance in the scheme of things. The following nine songs help put things in perspective:

1. Hard Knock Life – Jay Z

Jay-Z may have it all now, but that doesn’t mean he forgot where he came from. In “Hard Knock Life” he reminisces about the very real struggle of life in the projects.

2. Billionaire – Travie McCoy & Bruno Mars

Everyone has to start somewhere; even Bruno Mars and Travie McCoy. Travie McCoy grew up in a small town in upstate NY and now he’s “in a different city every night.” Although this now famous duo have accomplished their dreams, Travie McCoy’s desire is to share his wealth:
“I’ll probably take whatever’s left and just split it up
So everybody that I love can have a couple bucks”
So keep dreaming, as these two have shown, sometimes they do come true.

3. Fast Car – Tracy Chapman

Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” is a song about wanting to drive away from financial woes – something we’ve all probably fantasized about at one point or another.

4. Gold Digger -Kanye West

The struggle to pay for basic needs is not joke, but as Kanye points out, money comes with its own set of problems as well. Kanye’s “Gold Digger” is enough to make any wealthy man suspicious of their partner’s motives.

5. Forget You – Cee Lo Green

“Forget You” is a tongue-in-cheek story of a guy who just can’t seem to catch a break. Instead of being depressed about losing his love interest due to a lack of funding, he sings:
“I guess the change in my pocket wasn’t enough I’m like,
Forget you! And forget her too!”

6. Bills, Bills, Bills – Destiny’s Child

Destiny’s Child quickly asserted themselves as independent women with their popular single “Bills, Bills, Bills.” The song perfectly captures the frustration of living with a partner who feels like your paycheck is their ticket to a free ride.

7. Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill) – Wyclef

Wycleaf Jean’s “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)” tells a story of a girl who became roped into a line of prostitution in an effort to support her child. The tragic story reminds us that we all deserve happiness and basic necessities.

8. Justice – Miyavi

Miyavi is an up-and-coming artist who advocates for human rights through his music. In the song “Justice” he sings:
“A mother kills to feed her baby girl, she’s got no money for her food.
A homeless man dies of pneumonia, while billionaires try to buy the moon.
So tell me where we’re going?”

9. Everything She Wants – Wham

George Michael knows the struggle of working a dead end job. He laments:
“My situation never changes
Walking in and out of that door
Like a stranger for the wages
I give you all you say you want more
And all I can see is the end of the week”

10. Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi

However bleak the financial struggle may seem, Bon Jovi had it right:
“Whooah, we’re half way there
Livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it – I swear
Livin’ on a prayer”
