Approved Credit Counseling Agencies

Following passage of the 2005 Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act, everyone that files for Bankruptcy under either Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 must first complete a credit counseling course by an approved credit counseling agency. These courses may generally be completed either online, over the telephone, or at some places in person. The cost is generally $35.00 - $50.00. The courses are typically a one-time, one hour class. Following completion of the course, the approved agency will provide you with a credit counseling certificate. This certificate is provided to your attorney. Your attorney then files this certificate to the U.S. Bankruptcy  Court. This course must be completed prior to the filing of your bankruptcy. Failure to complete the course prior to the filing of the bankruptcy will result in the dismissal of your case. After the filing of your bankruptcy, a financial management course must also be completed within 45 days of the filing of your case. Similarly, failure to complete this second course may result in your case being closed without a discharge, which means your creditors will not be eliminated. Below is a list of approved credit counseling agencies. You must complete both course through an approved agency. You may complete both courses through the same agency.
